Play a video with subtitles. In my case the video is wider than the screen in terms of aspect ratio, leaving black stripes at the top and the bottom of the screen.
Right click, go to Video->Crop->16:9
The subtitles are now shifted towards the right edge of the screen. I would expect them not to be affected by the cropping at all.
Tested with version 2.1.1.

I experience the same thing as kamil. I am watching a 3D video 3840x1080 pixels (3D side by side) as 2D by setting the aspect ratio to 32:9 and cropping 1920/2 pixels off the left or right side of the image. The subtitles however are still centered with respect to the uncropped image, i.e. they overflow the screen to the left or right (depending on whether I crop left or right). An option to move subtitles horizontally would fix the issue or of course just center them to the image actually displayed. This is in VLC 2.1.2
This bug is still present in VLC 2.1.4 making new VLC versions completely unusable for me because I always watch movies cropped to full screen resolution with 16:9 aspect ratio (1920x1080). Last version when subtitles worked fine while croping enabled was v2.0.8 Twoflower.

Now the subtitles are not getting cropped but they are aligned to the right-bottom of the screen, no matter if I change preferences (Ctrl+P) >> Subtitles >> Position: to "bottom-left". Screenshot here: http://j.mp/subtitle_right
If automatic centering of subtitles is not possible, then add an option for "Force Subtitle Position (Horizontal)"
3 years and nothing has changed? I am surprised how few people complaining about this bug.
So is there a solution or so few of us use subtitles and video crop.
I would be extremely grateful for simple option to display subtitles in the middle.

This also can be seen if you try to hide station logo by cropping to show only film area?
I confirm that this bug is still present in version 3.0.8 (windows).
It happens every time crop is used with soft subtitles. After cropping the video, the subtitles are no more centered but on the right by a variable amount depending by the crop (16:9, 4:3, etc.)
This happen no matter the codec of the video, both fullscreen or in a window, cropping from an video with wide aspect ratio (e.g. 2.21:1) to a less wide aspect ratio (e.g. 4:3).
Note: if the original video is not wide (e.g. 4:3) and the applied crop is a wide aspect ratio (e.g. 2.21:1) the subtitles are off-centered to the left instead.
In many instances the subtitles are so off-centered to be partially outside the video.
