When supplying a login for SMB, the dialog has the option "remember password". Even when ticking this option, when browsing a protected SMB share without anonymous access, I am prompted for credentials at every folder, but the username and password are not pre-filled. Built-in file browser is therefore effectively unusable for SMB shares without anonymous access. (No, enabling anonymous access is not a solution.)
To be clear:
Browse to a SMB share without anonymous access.
Login prompt appears. Enter credentials and tick "Remember password".
Login succeeds. Browse to a subfolder.
Expected: Subfolder contents appear.
Could you explain how "it's not actually fixed" is not adequate justification for reopening a bug closed as "fixed"? Unless you can provide a satisfactory answer, I'll be reopening it again, since this is still happening in nightly 2.1.0-20170114.
This is still occurring on both devices using the latest nightly build (2.1.0-20170117). Therefore, it is not fixed, and therefore reopening is not "without justification".
Cleared data, uninstalled existing build and installed 0117 build. Browse to protected directory, prompted for credentials, authenticate successfully. Touch on subdirectory, prompted for credentials again. Checked the smbd.log on the file server and saw the following:
[2017/01/17 19:57:07.808895, 2] ../source3/auth/auth.c:305(auth_check_ntlm_password) check_ntlm_password: authentication for user [chris] -> [chris] -> [DOMAIN\chris] succeeded[...][2017/01/17 19:57:10.110633, 2] ../source3/auth/auth.c:315(auth_check_ntlm_password) check_ntlm_password: Authentication for user [chris] -> [chris] FAILED with error NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER
(The truncated [...] is a series of failed logins for "Guest" which I assume to be VLC trying to get the contents of the subdirectories and failing with "Directory is empty". Separate issue?)
The first of these is the initial successful authentication, while the second is where I am prompted for credentials again. When the dialog reappears, it's only showing the username and not the domain. Other apps authenticate successfully and remember credentials, so I'm ruling out a network misconfiguration.
My guesses as to cause:
Not saving the domain part.
Not retrieving the domain part (properly).
Assuming the hostname to be the domain name.
I've attached the log, but I don't see anything that I can pin directly on authentication.
Hi,
I'm not sure if I should reopen this ticket or just create a new one. Right now I'm getting the same issue. After I connect a SMB share and add it to favourites list, I'm asked to enter credentials. When I close the app and open it again the credentials are not remembered.
I'm using Android TV: 8.0.0 kernel: 4.9.54
VLC version:3.0.13 rev 387f303ba

Artur
Sony Android TV
Android v8.0.0
Security Version 1 November 2018
Kernel version 3.10.79
and VLC 3.0.13
The "remember credentials" box does not appear and I have to input credentials for my SMB share every time I restart VLC.
SMB share on windows 10 PC is fine, currently working without any problems with Archos video player on same TV. Archos remembers credentials without any problem
Since last year I reported it there are still no changes and the passwords are still not remembered. My current version is:\
Revision: 1c70d300e\
VLC: f5b81842d (2019-06-26)\
Android TV 8.0

Also happening to me on my Samsung Galaxy Note8 using VLC-Android-3.3.0-dev-armv8-20200109-0146.apk to connect to my Samba share served on Ubuntu. Notably, this does NOT seem to occur with Windows 10 shares. Only Linux shares seem to be affected.
Can confirm this is still present in latest stable when using with my Samba share on Ubuntu. Password is asked after every activity- even after a video is cast to a chromecast and i try to go back and select another video, then the prompt appears again.
I am also having this issue. Every time I access my SMB share which is located on my Asus router I have to login to the drive even though remember is selected then I have to enter it again when I go to a folder, then again when I attempt to play a video in the folder. Every move I make I have to enter it. Android 8
I can also confirm that local network smb folders keep asking for a password (i.e. "remember password" doesn't work), unless the share is added as a favorite.
Passwords on SMB shares were not being stored/remembered after a recent update on Android TV. Setting the minimum SMB protocol on my NAS to "SMB2" has fixed this issue for me.
VLC 3.2.12, Android TV 9 (mibox 3, new Pie beta)
Passwords not remembered, even with SMB2 already as minimum protocol.
Setting a favourite share does not help (I already had it).
It was working fine on 8, for months.
