VLC on Mac not streaming to Chromecast with Google TV

For the last few months (maybe 7-ish months) my Mac has been unable to stream to Chromcast.

I went over your Report bugs page so I hope i've been able to provide enough info for you.

Steps to reproduce: Start video playback in VLC on Mac. Select Playback > Renderer > Chromcast. TV screen turns black with blue Chromecast input logo, file name flashes, but nothing happens and after a minute TV goes back to chromcast homepage.

Reproducibility of the problem: Issue occurs every single time - totally unable to stream to Chromcast.

Format of the file being played: All formats are effected, mp4, avi, mkv, etc.

Bug severities: Normal: Expert feature not working, e.g. stream output problem.

Version / Operating system: As of this post I am using the latest version of: VLC 3.0.20, macOS Sonoma 14.0

Hardware: MacBook Air - Retina, 13-inch, 2020 - 1.1 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 Chromecast HD with Google TV

Preferences: Have reset preferences and restarted VLC,
Have also deleted VLC and re-downloaded on Mac, Have also deleted VLC and re-downloaded on Chromcast... No change in issue.

Have reset chromcast, Have disconnected and reconnected wifi, Have ensured both laptop and tv are on same wi-fi network.

Nightly builds: Have tried the latest Nightly build VLC 4.0 - macOS (Intel) with no change

A Reddit user found a work around to fix this issue that may point to the cause of the problem - I have tried the workaround and VLC is now able to cast to my Chromcast:

Workaround: "What I did to fix it is I uninstalled the chromecast built-in updates on the androidTV device I have and it's now working. I guess VLC are using some old protocols which the chromecast no longer supports or something"

Pathway to turn off built-in updates: Settings > Apps > See all apps > Show System Apps > Chromcast built-in > Uninstall updates > OK.

I hope this helps in diagnosing the issue for the Mac users who have been unable to cast to their chromcast since last year.

Your logs are corrupted (missing line endings?) and basically illegible, TBH.

Also if it's a change on Chromecast side, then it's not a VLC regression, and not a simple matter of identifying where things went wrong. On the other hand, it should not be specific to macOS if so.

My apologies, I just followed the instruction on VLC's Report bugs page - I don't actually know anything about VLC logs, but somebody needed to send through this Helpdesk request so the issue was recorded somewhere, so I put it in and tried to add every bit of info I could from the Report bugs page.

I'm not an export on any of this stuff. In terms of whose responsible, VLC made their app to stream to Chromcast (and made a Chromcast app to go with it and added in the Playback>Renderer feature on the desktop app), Chromcast didn't make their device to stream VLC, so in general it seems like a fix VLC needs to make to keep the app current/compatible with Chromcast for Mac users.

I have not reproduced this myself, but I work on Chromecast on the JavaScript side, so here's a theory: does VLC use a plain http web server to serve the content to the Cast device? I believe older devices may not enforce restrictions on http content in https pages, but newer Android-based devices may have gotten a firmware update in the past months that started enforcing this restriction.

There may not be anything Mac-specific happening on the client side, but if I'm right, users with older Cast devices wouldn't see this issue. That could also explain OP's workaround to uninstall Android updates and disable further updates.

@fkuehne I can reproduce a similar issue (#26469) on a "Sony BRAVIA 4K VH21" device with both 3.x and 4.x VLC versions.

The demux_chromecast workaround works well on macOS.

Unfortunately, no such method seems to be available on iOS. Version 3.6.4 of the iOS app often tried to connect to hotel televisions on different floors, which caused the TV display to change but still didn’t work.

The workaround (of going into Chromcast settings > deleting Chromcast built-in) stopped working. When the workaround was working, the Chromcast built-in app kept re-generating itself, so when you turned the TV back on you had to go and re-delete it again everytime.

Chromecast Built-In has now changed to Google Cast in the system app list.

Deleting it from my Chromcast resulted in (at least for me) my TV disappearing from VLC > Playback > Renderer. And then when I reset and got it back up, Chromecast was showing Chromecast Built-In instead of Google Cast….and now has reverted back to Google Cast….As a workaround it’s just been too unreliable to use.

At least one user in the linked Reddit post reported the original issue of using Renderer from Mac not working has resolving itself after updating macOS Sequoia (15.0.1) - but at least for me this did not have an effect.

For now I’ve just switched on sharing on my Mac via the File Sharing setting and am streaming to the TV by going into the Chaomcast VLC app to the Local Network section.

I’m deleting my GitLab account here as I only made it to report this issue - and it’s been 9 months without a fix, so I’m just cleaning out this unused account - but according to the VLC delete account info, this request should stay active under a system-wide "Ghost User" ID.
