Since an update to the system since yesterday, VLC does not play any video files any more (I.e audio only) if output is set to "VDPAU" and crashes since a week when output is set to "Automatic".

Crashing in libX11 presumably through libva is not something VLC can do much about, and is most likely a distro bug. This is likely caused by a recent ABI break within libva.
