Playing a music album in the background (i.e. screen is blank) causes the next track in the list to be muted. The sound returns if you wake the screen up (to the lock screen). The lock screen music app shows that the track has still been playing, just without sound. The sound returns immediately on waking. It seems to always occur regardless of track length. I only noticed this after upgrading to iOS 12; not sure if it was this or a VLC update, though.
Also just tested in iOS 12.0.1 with same result.

tried with iPhone X 12.1 and played a song from an album and hit next still had sound.
tried with iPhone X 12.1 and played a song from an album scrubbed till short before the end and waited for it to go automatically to the next song and still had sound. both times with headphones connected over lightning
I can reproduce this quite consistently on my iPhone SE (this seems to be a common model for users reporting this), VLC 3.1.8 (324), iOS 12.2. To clarify, the symptom is no sound is heard when the next track starts until the device is woken to the lock screen, at which time it appears the track has been playing throughout but with no sound. It does not matter how long I wait, the sound only comes when I raise to wake the device. Seems to happen both with old and new files, all media in my library is music albums added via the wifi sharing interface. I have only tested playing via the headphone jack, I see others have been unable to reproduce with BT or the lightning DAC adapter so I suspect this may only affect devices that still have the onboard DAC+analog output.
While gathering details to add to this ticket, I discovered "Continue audio playback" and "Allow audio playback in background" in settings, which both sound relevant and were defaulted to 'off'. While testing with these 'on' I did manage to continue to next track successfully a few times, but the issue recurred so this does not seem to be the solution. I suspect there is simply a short time window after lock where the device is in a higher power state and the issue does not occur.
Happy to assist however I can with further testing.
@brightghost thanks I'll give it another shot. Sadly I doubt we have an iPhone SE at the office and especially for these issues testing with device is better but I will definitely double check with the simulator
So I've reset an iPhone Simulator with iPhone SE and iOS 12.2.1 so that I have default settings.
"Continue audio playback" and "Allow audio playback in background" are "Always" and "on" and in the simulator there is no chance I can reproduce it :/
@brightghost do you happen to be a developer and know how to get the logs from your device? If so there might be some hints that could help us resolve this issue.
Otherwise I will try to ask around among friends if I can get an iPhone SE Device for testing this
I'm also experiencing this on iOS 12.2 and VLC 3.1.8.
A way to reproduce:
Make sure that you have "Audio Playback in Background" enabled in settings.
Give three different mp3 or m4a files the same album tag with track number tags 1, 2, and 3. These files should be at least 2 minutes in length, so you should enjoy the contents.
They will appear as grouped in the main view. Open that group and tap track 1 to begin playback. Then lock the phone and track 1 should continue playing while the display is off. At this point, do not touch the phone. Allow track 1 to finish playing, expecting to hear track 2 afterward. You will notice that playback is silent when track 2 begins "playing". As soon as you touch the phone (press any button) then auditory playback resumes at an arbitrary point within track 2.
This bug is quite frustrating for me because I have to keep tapping my home button while my phone is locked to continue listening to the audio book that I'm listening to right now.
I’m experiencing exactly this on a device with a DAC+Analog output as well (iPod Touch 6th Gen). I use VLC to playback a [licensed] mix for a business environment, and would appreciate any updates on this issue. Thank you!
