Default audio track / language setting

There seems to be one for subtitles, but not for an audio track itself.

Am I correct that it's not currently possible?

There is one for subtitles in settings -> subtitles

this is hardly needed, also at the same time telx subtitle support https://github.com/videolan/vlc/blob/master/modules/codec/telx.c

I want a default language and subtitle track selection preference as well.

Finally telx support was added again, now lets get this feature back into android version for mobile and TV! go go go ;)
