Connecting to local SMB share very very slow

Hi,

I used to connect to an SMB share on my local Unraid server and watch videos using that and it was super quick. For some reason, in the past few months, it has suddenly got super slow. Fetching the folder lists is slow, fetching the file lists is slow and then when they finally load, tapping a file, it takes ages before it starts to play.

I try connecting using the Files app and it's super quick.

Any ideas?

Are you interested in testing the current beta to see if the speed is better?

I have actually been a test Flight beta tester for VLC on iOS for quite some time now.

It still performs the same in the beta.

I even uninstalled the beta and went back to the App Store version to check but both are horrendously slow.

Quick note: I just downloaded Infuse to try that and it's super fast, super fluid.

It works fast for me with 3.3.0

Current tvOS version (3.3.0 build 416) on an Apple TV 4th Gen is producing a somewhat similar issue. Connecting to a Windows 10 PC via SMB is successful, no lag or delay fetching files, but files would just try to load and load continously without opening. Some file types (e.g. .avi) simply do not open. Clicking on them takes me back to the directory.

The files can easily be opened with the build 413.

Does not work with 416 but worked with 413?

I'm using VLC for tvOS right now with build 413 because the app auto-updated to 416 and with the new build it wouldn't be able to play anything from my network-attached Windows 10 PC.

(I also use VLC for watching HTTPS Live Streams (TV), that feature works fine with both versions. )

If you needed an explanation video, just tell me and I'm going to make it right away.

Did you do any specific configuration to your Windows 10 PC? Custom ports for the SMB, etc.? Local firewall?

No, I haven't modified anything in those settings.

If I want to share something through the local network, I simply right-click on the folder and use the Give access to –» Specific people... -» Add Everyone.

This way I can access my files through the Finder on my Macbook Air and through the VLC app on my iPhone and iPad.

My iPhone uses the most recent build 416 and files open through the SMB server as intended.

You can see in the video that with build 416 the file doesn't even reach the loading screen. This is a .wmv file, but with some extensions (e.g. .mkv) upon clicking on it, the app just loads indefinitely.

SMBv1 or SMBv2?

Seems like my only option on this PC is SMBv1, see image:

Windows 10 has SMB 2. THis is an option to have SMB1 in addition.

Okay, I have checked it through PowerShell, it says SMBv2 is enabled for me. I have not been tampering with the settings, I'm using the default setup Windows gives users initially.

So we don't know if the connection is SMBv1 or v2

I was able to reproduce the problem with my Windows XP VM in its default configuration.

Temporary fix in VLCKit!144 (merged)

@alkoka can you try the beta we released yesterday (build 317) and confirm that the problem was resolved?

@alkoka how does it behave if you try to force SMBv1 in preferences and restart the app?

And also a suggestion , for the oled screen dark mode , I think that getting the bottom bar also to be black instead of grey , will make the overall appearance for Oled Dark Mode better .

I cannot reproduce. This displays correctly here. Please double-check that build 417 is installed on your device.

Maybe having a multiple line filename will reproduce it for you , but as far as the build installed on the device is concerned , it’s 417 .

The difference I see is that the line spacing in your screenshot seems a lot bigger than in mine for which I don't have an explanation.

@Akshat hah, I just noticed from your TestFlight feedback that you are based in Asia. What is the language used on device and the region? Can do a screenshot of the system setting's "Language & Region" screen?

I am not doing something crazy in that section , but could be anything right now .
